BubSled 1960 Bubbletop Sports Coupe
Lindsay took this 1960 Chev as a part
trade on his 66 Caddy. The couple had been imported in 1988 for John Taverna,
and after passing through a couple more hands, ended up in Lindsay's
driveway. To ensure maximum enjoyment, the car was kept on the road as much
as possible throughout the 6 month rebuild, during which time he applied his
master touch to it.
First on the
agenda was the bodywork, for which Lindsay went straight for the razor
blade. The boot, hood and door handles were shave, the doors not opening
with push buttons that fit flush with door skin. He also filled the fuel
filler door, lengthened the rear deck lid and frenched in the '59 Caddy
taillights.
With all the body mods taken care of, it was time for Lindsay to
do his thing and spray the whole car in Spray Chief Scarlet Caddy. After
satisfying himself with the base, he then applied the ghost flames,
marbling, lace panels, pinlines and scrolls; not just on the outside but on
the inside and under the bonnet. Photo's cannot do justice to the amount of
effort and detail by Lindsay.
To power the purple package, Lindsay
chose a mild 350 Chev which was fully rebuilt by Pomona Automotive. Behind
the 350 is a trusty old powerglide which was also rebuilt. Front and rear
suspension components were replaced, the springs sourced from a V8 Holden
Statesman. 15x10 and 15x8 Cragar Pro Stars wrapped in 225/60 and 265/50
rubber complete the package. Blakemore Upholstery sharpened his needle and
retrimmed the original seats in grey velour. The floor and boot are lined
with grey plush pile carpet.
Lindsay would like to thank his family
and friends Brett, Geoff and Trevor for all of their assistance. Having only
been on the road for about 9 months, the Houston's are thinking of selling
their Chev to make way for the next project, a 1936 Chev flatback sedan, but
only after they have finished their son's 1949 Ford Ambulance, custom of
course !
